Animal Care Companions

Patricia McKinney

  • Patricia is the founder and owner of Portland Mutt Strut, LLC and not only oversees management and the day-to-day operations of the business but also serves as a full-time Animal Care Companion providing all types of dog walking and animal care, including in-home overnight, weekend and vacation care. Her love for animals propelled her to follow her passion full-time and start Portland Mutt Strut, LLC.

  • Patricia, an Oregon Humane Society (OHS) Volunteer for nine years, has extensive experience walking all types of dogs as the leader of one of the volunteer dog walking teams at OHS that walks and cares for 80-100 dogs each Sunday afternoon.

  • She received the “Faithful Companion” Volunteer award for multifaceted service to OHS in 2004 and for the last five years serves as a Veteran level member of OHSTAR (Oregon Humane Society Technical Animal Rescue) . Patricia’s animal handling and team leading skills have proven invaluable during technical rescues involving dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals.

  • Patricia spent a week in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina representing OHS as part of the Humane Society of the United States’ (HSUS) largest animal rescue and sheltering operation. With her teammates, she handled and cared for over 200 Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and other “challenging breeds” after they were rescued from flooded New Orleans.

  • Since Katrina, Patricia has participated in several large scale rescues with OHS including freeing over 130 feral dogs from cruel mistreatment and aiding in their rehabilitation for adoption.

  • Patricia shares her home and life with her cat, Scooter, and extends her love to all the OHS animals, particularly the dogs.

Jennifer S

  • Jennifer is the consummate animal lover and if she had her way, she would spend every moment with them. In fact, that’s almost true in her role as the Animal Training and Behavior Assistant at the Oregon Humane Society (OHS). She’s responsible for understanding animal behavior and helping diagnose and heal family-pet relationships.

  • Jennifer cares deeply for animal welfare and rights. To that end, she’ll stop on the side of the road to rescue a stray dog, foster OHS kittens, trap feral cats for spaying or neutering and later return, and provide care for a neighbor’s cat.

  • In addition to serving as one of Portland Mutt Strut’s Animal Care Companions, Jennifer also provides limited dog boarding in her home for our clients. She has been dog sitting in her home for five years and thoroughly enjoys the experience.

  • In addition to being an OHS volunteer for eight years and receiving the prestigious “OHS Volunteer of the Year” Award in 2006, Jennifer also serves as a Specialist level member of OHSTAR (Oregon Humane Society Technical Animal Rescue). Jennifer’s animal handling skills, animal behavior expertise and calm demeanor have proven invaluable during technical rescues involving dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals.

anika m

  • Anika’s love of animals has been developed and nurtured nearly since birth. Her calm demeanor and passionate heart are demonstrated in her commitment to all animals.

  • An Oregon Humane Society (OHS) volunteer since 2006, Anika serves as a regular dog walker and has since expanded her contributions to include working side-by-side with OHS Animal Care staff, and one of select few approved to care for dogs under the OHS Humane Investigators care.

  • Anika received the distinguished honor of OHS Volunteer of the Year in 2008, serving as testament to her dedication, responsibility and credibility.

  • A continual learner, Anika studies canine behavior and training by immersing herself in literature and courses designed to further her skills and education.

  • Anika was an early starter at age four when she attached a dog collar and leash to her plush German Shepherd in order to "walk him" properly, and in her teens became the official (real) dog walker in her neighborhood.

  • In addition to all her time at the OHS shelter, Anika also serves as a foster parent for OHS and The Pixie Project.

  • She shares her home with two dogs and three cats, all adopted.

Cindy H

  • You will always remember Cindy by her enormous smile, consistently friendly demeanor and her everlasting love of animals, especially dogs and cats.

  • Her compassion is clearly indicated in her work as a licensed clinical social worker in community mental health. Also, just a few minutes with Cindy and a dog and you can see her love and passion for animals shining through.

  • For over three years Cindy has been a regular volunteer dog walker at the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) on the Sunday afternoon team that walks and cares for 80-100 dogs. She handles the strongest of dogs by teaching them good walking behavior using training tools and her skills.

  • Cindy currently spends her life with her two furry felines and has had many dogs and fish growing up.
